What's a Broken Ankle with Surgery Worth?

In June, a Philadelphia jury (Waldon v. SEPTA, Philadelphia CCP #090801187) awarded a woman with an operated-on broken ankle $5,150,000 in a car accident case.  She had 4 operations on her ankle.  She testified that even with these operations she still could not walk right, climb steps or stand for any length of time.  She said she could no longer care for her young child or elderly mother. 

The woman's doctors felt that she was permanently disabled from ever working again but the insurance company doctors believed that she could return to the work she used to do sitting down as an office receptionist.  The experts also disagreed about how much it would cost the Plaintiff in the future to have her medical care and other costs taken care of.  There were a lot of other arguments but all of the experts agreed that the accident was not her fault and they agreed that she had broken her ankle and had needed surgery. 

Before trial, the insurance company had offered only $500,000 and they increased their offer to $750,000 on the day of trial.
