Cell Phone Use While Driving

The Secretary of Transportation for the US government, Ray LaHood, has weighed in on cell phone use.  The U.S. Department of Transportation has decreed (by Rule) that interstate truck and bus drivers are prohibited from using cell phones.  He was quoted as saying, "when drivers of large trucks, buses and hazardous materials take their eyes off the road for even a few seconds the outcome can be deadly." Sad but true.  Distracted drivers caused half a million injuries in 2009 and at least 5400 fatalities.  The number is climbing. 

Violating the new federal law rule can result in fines up to about $2,750 and loss of license.  Punitive damages may be claimed in certain circumstances. 

In addition to the Department of Transportation ban, some companies with fleets of vehicle on the road, such as FedEx or UPS, already have similar cell phone use while driving prohibitions.  "One text or call could wreck it all..."   Don't text and drive, don't use a handheld cellphone while driving and don't drive distracted.
